When human beings experience trauma, or severe life threatening situations, it is not uncommon for their lives to unravel. Having a great passion is to serve the needy and be a role model to those who have been through a traumaticor stressful experience.
Meet Roshni Lal, a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and an inspiration to those around her. Her roots take us back to India. Her paternal great grandfather’s name was Algu and belonged to Jaiwar Caste in Uttar Pardesh. At the age of 28,he decided to travel miles away from India to a tiny island called Fiji Islands with his wife Mahgniya on the Ship,SS Vadala, which arrived onthe 26thof March 1895 with 747 indentured laboures. He worked in the Labasa sugar mill as an indentured labourer under the British IndentureSystem. After completing his 5 years of Indenture Agreement called ‘girmit,'he and his wifehad the chance to return to Indiabut instead theydecided to dedicate the rest of their lives to Fiji. In Fiji, the couple had 6 children (all boys) with Roshni’s father being the second eldest.Algu continued to work at the Labasa Sugar mill.
Born and brought up in Labasa, Fiji Islands, Mrs. Lal’s life was never a bed of roses. Having lost her father at the age of 6 meant seeking fatherly love and protection in her mother. After her father’s death, her mother worked as a market vendor to support the family. Roshni’snormal day would be seen as her waking up as early as 5am to help her mother with daily chores and later selling cow’s milk from one house to another before going to school.After experiencing many up’s and down’s in life, she successfully completed her secondary school education and later got married.

LIFE'S ADVENTURES

The desire to see progress in one’s life, saw Roshni and her husband moving to the capital of Fiji Islands – Suva. In Suva, she worked as an accountant before migrating to Australia. The challenging and ever fast life of Australia gave her the opportunity to enroll ina healthcarecourse after which she started working as a nurse and continues to do so till date.

In Australia, all went well until life took another U-Turn when she became critically ill and had to rely on life support. After days and months in the hospital fightingbravely for life she successfully defeated death and got discharged. This is when victorious Roshnidecided to re-live her life with a new vision and mission.

Her encounter with Swami AnandGiriMaharajgave her the rare opportunity to get enlightened more about Hinduism, life’s purpose. Year2010 saw Roshni and her husband making the most memorable visit to India. Hindustan’s visit not only permitted her to touch and offer her respect to Mother India and get her blessings but also visit sacred andhistorical monuments which she had heard about from her great grand father – Algu, read in books or watched on either television or Bollywood movies.

From Prayagrai to Vrindavan, Mathura, Katyayani Shakti Peeth, kumbhMela, Manikarnika (Kashi), Ayodhya, Haridhwaar,Hrikesh and Ganga Isnaan, Roshni and her husband made their journey the holiest of all.

Correspondingly with god’s blessings and Swami AnandGiriMaharaj’s grace,the couple stopped over at some of the historical monuments such as Taj Mahal,Hawa Mahal, Agra Fort, FatehPurSikhri, Delhi Fort, BhoolBhulaiya-Lucknow and Rajasthan. Upon her return back home she continued to follow what she had learned from her Swami ji.

This year marks the 10th year of Roshni being intensely associated with social service not only in Australia but in Fiji as well as other places of the globe too.

SOCIAL WORK JOURNEY

It was such a divine moment as her prayers got answered and she was requested by Swarna Bharat Pariwar to join their campaign. She accepted with pleasure. She visited the slum areas and villages where she saw the state of lives of not only humans but also animals and what they were going through. It made her realize what she was born to do and that is SEVA (help). She is a very emotional and passionateperson, and these two traits were going to be the best tools in her hands in serving humanity. Right there at one of those visits with SBP,she knew what she was called to do.She envisaged trying to get ridof the struggles and sufferings of humans and animals, and it became her driving force. This was whenshe decided to join Swarna Bharat Parivaar and she went on to being elected as a trustee.

Rashmi feels that she will have some comfort within her if she is able to bring a smile to the people in the slums andprovide them with better grazing facilities for their animals through theSBPorganization. She is blessed to be associated with the organization and sees this as a great achievement. Being ableto serve the needy gives her great pleasure.She sees it as ahonor to be unselfish and surrender oneself whole-heartedly in helping the poor and needy.

These two are not the only focus of her social work though. She also intends to serve and provide support to the youth of today. Being able to get them off the streets and empowering them to refrain from wrongdoingswhile teaching them respect of parents and elders within the societyis a mission close to Roshni's heart. She wants her work to bring about great change in their lives and help them achieve something meaningful in their lives. Roshni would like to hold their hands and guide them to the path of love, devotion and self-respect.

She has now committed her life to fully serve and stand by the principles of Swarna Bharat Parivaar. She believes that the principles of this organization can bring her closer to her social work goals.
